Jones Scores Career-High 24, Sandburg Men Hit 20 Wins for 3rd Year in a Row

James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored a career-high 24 points and the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team clinched its third straight 20-win season with a 75-65 Arrowhead Conference victory over Sauk Valley on Thursday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
KEY MOMENTS
- Jones scored the final eight points of an 11-0 run midway through the first half to put Sandburg (20-7, 4-2) ahead 26-19.
- Up 37-35, the Chargers scored eight of the last night in the half, capped by a Jones steal-and-layup, to take a 45-36 lead into the break.
- Sauk Valley (18-7, 5-2) got within 65-58 with 4:30 to go, but sophomore Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) hit a 3-pointer off a feed from Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) to push Sandburg’s lead back to 10. After a trey by the Skyhawks’ Mario Williams, Young found Fayhee again for another triple and a 71-61 advantage with 3:30 to go.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Jones went 9 of 19 from the floor to surpass his previous career-best of 21 points set last season against Eureka JV. He scored 14 in the first half and finished with three steals.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
- Fayhee connected on 8 of 10 shots — including all three of his 3-point attempts — for 19 points. The sophomore guard also had four assists and four steals.
- Cody Baer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) scored 12, had a team-best eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
